A private 3-day tour of Luxor, Dendera, and Abydos is an excellent choice for a more in-depth exploration of ancient Egyptian religious and historical sites. The itinerary expands on the classic Luxor highlights by including two of the most significant and well-preserved temples outside of the city.
Here is a detailed breakdown of the typical itinerary, as well as a list of what’s generally included and excluded in such a tour package.
Day 1: The West Bank – City of the Dead
This day is dedicated to the necropolis of ancient Thebes, where pharaohs and nobles were buried in elaborate tombs.
- Morning: Pick-up from your hotel or cruise ship in Luxor by a private, air-conditioned vehicle.
- Valley of the Kings: The main attraction on the West Bank. Your standard ticket typically allows entry to three tombs (some famous ones like Tutankhamun’s require an extra ticket). Your Egyptologist guide will explain the history, religious beliefs, and artistic details of the tombs.
- Temple of Queen Hatshepsut: A unique and stunning mortuary temple built into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. Your guide will tell you about the powerful female pharaoh who commissioned it and its unique architecture.
- Valley of the Queens: A burial site for the wives and children of pharaohs. The most famous tomb here is that of Queen Nefertari, known for its exceptional preservation and vibrant paintings, though it is often a separate, high-cost ticket.
- Medinet Habu: The mortuary temple of Ramses III. This is a must-see for its impressive scale and remarkably well-preserved, colorful wall carvings depicting battles and religious ceremonies.
- Colossi of Memnon: A brief stop for a photo opportunity at the two massive statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III.
Day 2: The East Bank & Nile River
This day focuses on the grand religious centers of ancient Thebes and a relaxing trip on the Nile.
- Morning: Your guide will pick you up for the East Bank tour.
- Karnak Temple Complex: One of the world’s largest religious sites. You will spend a significant amount of time here, exploring the Avenue of Sphinxes, the Great Hypostyle Hall, the Sacred Lake, and the various sanctuaries.
- Luxor Temple: Located in the city center and beautifully illuminated at night. Your guide will explain its history, from its construction to its use as a Roman fort and a later Christian church.
- Felucca Boat Trip: In the afternoon or evening, you’ll take a leisurely trip on a traditional felucca on the Nile River. This offers a peaceful and picturesque view of the city and its surroundings from the water.
Day 3: The Sacred Temples of Dendera and Abydos
This day is a special highlight of a 3-day tour, taking you north of Luxor to two of the most artistically and historically significant temples in Egypt.
- Morning: Early pick-up for the drive to Dendera and Abydos. The drive itself is a chance to see local villages and the beautiful Egyptian countryside.
- Abydos (Temple of Seti I): This temple is one of the most important in Egypt. Abydos was considered the burial place of the god Osiris and a major pilgrimage center. The Temple of Seti I is particularly famous for its fine, delicate reliefs, which are considered some of the best art from the New Kingdom period. It also contains the famous “King List,” which details a succession of Egyptian pharaohs.
- Dendera (Temple of Hathor): The Temple of Hathor is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. Dedicated to the goddess of love, music, and joy, it is known for its beautiful astronomical ceiling and the famous Dendera Zodiac (a replica is on-site; the original is in the Louvre in Paris). Your guide will point out the unique architectural features and the crypts.
- Return: After visiting both temples, you will be driven back to your hotel in Luxor or to the airport for your departure.
