A private, half-day tour in Luxor that focuses on the Tombs of the Nobles, the replica of Tutankhamun’s tomb, and the Howard Carter House is a wonderful way to explore some of the more specialized but significant sites on the West Bank. This tour provides a deeper look into the lives of ancient Egyptians beyond the pharaohs and gives context to the most famous archaeological discovery in history.
Here is a detailed breakdown of what you can expect from this tour.
Itinerary Highlights
This is typically a 3-4 hour experience and is best done in the morning to avoid the heat of the day.
Morning Pick-up: Your private Egyptologist guide will meet you at your hotel or cruise ship in a private, air-conditioned vehicle. You will then cross the Nile River to the West Bank to start the tour.
Tombs of the Nobles: These tombs are carved into the rocky hillsides of the West Bank and are a highlight for several reasons. Unlike the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the tombs of the nobles depict scenes from their daily lives, such as farming, hunting, and family gatherings. The art is often more colorful, detailed, and realistic than the stylized art of the pharaohs. Your guide will take you to some of the most famous and well-preserved tombs, such as those of Ramose, Sennefer, and Menna. The specific tombs you visit may depend on which ones are open at the time.
Howard Carter House: This is an important stop for anyone interested in the history of Egyptology. The mud-brick house is where the famous British archaeologist Howard Carter lived during his long search for Tutankhamun’s tomb. The house has been restored as a museum, preserving its original look, and it contains many of the tools, maps, and photographs from the time of the discovery. It offers an intimate look at the man behind the most significant archaeological find in history.
Replica of Tutankhamun’s Tomb: Located next to the Howard Carter House, this exact replica of the boy king’s tomb was created to help protect the original tomb from the damage caused by a constant stream of visitors. The replica is an impressive work of digital art and conservation. It faithfully reproduces the burial chamber with its famous wall paintings, and an exhibition explains the process of discovery and conservation. Many people find the experience of visiting the replica just as powerful as the original, and it’s a great way to help preserve the real tomb.
We are certified in Egypt and Luxor. We proudly collaborated with Dr. Zahi Hawass (Egyptologist) during the Egyptian Excavation Mission in the Valley of the Kings (Luxor, June 24, 2021). We’ve also worked with the University of Chicago and the German Archaeological Institute at Medinet Habu Temple.
